A few home projects on my list for 2012

I thought I'd take stock of my pinterest account and do something productive in the way of the new year, so I created a new pin board for a few Home Projects I'd like to complete this year. Starting with the easy ones first.

I wasn't sure I'd make it here today. It seems so odd and so sad too. Almost exactly a year ago my husband lost his youngest sister and today we got the news that his youngest brother just died. This list just seems so trivial in the big picture of life and eternity, but sometimes it's the little things that help us keep our minds from thinking about the big things that make our hearts too sad to bear it. I'll be back here again to share my lists, my projects, my hopes, desires and dreams. I can't wait to catch up and connect again.

My son stopped by this morning with some Christmas hats for the dogs. As you can see they are quite thrilled with them...haha! I know it has been quite awhile since I have been here in this space but I wanted to stop by and wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holiday celebrations! My first decoupage project ever! It took my husband and I about 2 months to finish this project but we finished it this last weekend and now it's found it's place in our new home. After striping about five different layers of paint, sanding and painting it a light gray, I decoupaged the drawers. I had a few mishaps. That's why the middle drawer looks different then the rest, but in the end I think it turned out just right! Just needs a few knobs and it will be done.

In my never ending search on Craigslist for dining room tables and credenza's I came across this piece made by a company here in Seattle called Whitcomb & Company. I saved the picture for the beautiful flower made with tennis rackets, but most of their work involves using reclaimed and salvaged materials to create furniture.

Organized Closets

We are downsizing and moving from our house in the suburbs closer to the city. I've been selling things and trying to pick up a few new things that we will need for our new place that we are moving into this Saturday. I'm really excited about the big walk-in closet we are going to have and when I saw this beautifully organized closet on morning's light, I went to work right away tracking down this Ikea Lack Shelf on Craigslist (I don't like to pay full price if I don't have to of course) so I can implent this idea into my own new walk-in closet.

I'm a little excited and nervous and feeling a little sentimental about the move. Ideas are just swirling around in my head for our new space and new decor. You'll probably see many more of these ideas and inspirations here in the weeks to come.

As you might have noticed, I've been on a long break from this blogging space. Since last May, it has been quite the year for life interuptions, but I see new adventures on the horizon and am feeling the inspiration again. You might remember last year when I decorated for this masquerade ball. We loved the dramatic look and feel of the fabric columns with lights down the center, so this year, with a different theme in mind, we changed up the tables and decor for a vintage themed ball. I never attended the ball last year, so this year was a treat to eat a delicious catered meal, learn a little swing dance, join in with some karaoke (watching, not singing), and have fun with friends.

Holiday Treats

I made some of Marta's RoloTurtle Treats for my family for Thanksgiving and everyone loved them so much, I decided I'm making some to give as gifts. They are the easiest dessert I have ever made and are that perfect mix of sweet and salty taste that everyone loves.

Now I could just wrap them up in a box and that would probably be fine, but when I saw these festive cake plates that Dee made, my mind was made up. The gifts would not be complete without something pretty to present them on.

And those rolo turtle treats might be lonely on those plates all by themselves, so I ordered this Winter Wonderland Cupcake kit, thanks to a little Creature Comforts.

Now my favorite would be a piece of apple pie and these might be nice too, but that might be a little too much to ask of myself this time. These pie-shaped packages from Stephmodo sure are cute though, aren't they? What's your favorite holiday treat, one you like to bake or one you just like to eat?

I adore these pink walls in the home of Dave Alhadeff I saw on Design Sponge this morning. The colors in the furnishings and bedding in the room tone it down just right for the eyes. How about you, would you paint your walls pink? After seeing this I think I might start with the back of a door just to see how well it wears on me.

Wow, tomorrow is the first day of December and now is when it really feels like that festive time of year for me. It's probably because I celebrate my birthday on December 14th as well as Hanukkah and Christmas in December too. Hanukkah is early this year, starting tomorrow evening, and just today I am finally putting up holiday decorations.

I was inspired by this garland I saw on babble this morning. It's colors in blue, silver and white suit Hanukkah and it's designs are for Christmas too. I like these double duty decorations.

I picked up a few of these dreidels from Crate and Barrel last week. Mostly because I loved the flower design on the bottom, but also because they were so inexpensive. I seem to find a few new ones every year to add to my collection.

And of course you can't have a holiday without a DIY. I love this fleece pom pom hanukkah garland I spied on Creature Comforts this morning. Well I get better get off this computer and get busy decorating. I have lots of things to do today, including Hanukkah decorations for a few other events as well. I love this time of year. How about you?

I love this simple, organic centerpiece for the Thanksgiving table from the Blog Nog holiday series on Say Yes to Hoboken. Every year we enjoy two Thanksgiving dinners, one on Thursday, the original Turkey Day and one on Saturday at our home so my husband won't miss out on his lovely leftovers. Last year I borrowed my table decorating ideas from Design Sponge, so I've been waiting for a good simple, homemade idea to come my way again through blogging. I think I might try this one with a couple of small pumpkins to pretty up the center of my Thanksgiving table.

2011 Adventure Calendar

Yeah! I finally got my computer fixed. I didn't realize that my computer had about 47 viruses on it. I was starting to get really discouraged and thought that I just didn't want to blog anymore. I thought I just needed a new computer, but I really don't have the money right now to spend on the one that I want...so, a trip to Best Buy and $300.00 later and she is all fixed up. Now she loads pictures in like 2 seconds instead of 10 minutes, Soooo...I have no more excuses. Just in time to order my 2011 Adventure Calendar from Our Little Love Nest. I bought their Challenge Calendar last year and am still using it. I'm can't wait to receive the new calendar. After all those challenges in 2010, I'm ready for new adventures in 2011!

Little Bits of Little Winter

My husband and I packed our bags and left Saturday morning, excited for a much needed getaway. Off to stay at the trendy Ace Hotel and shop my first blogger sponsored event, Little Winter. It was nice to put real faces to some of the blogs that I read and see all their handmade wares in person. The beds in the hotel were a little firm for my taste, but the Little Winter handmade market was well worth it. You might want to see for yourself...

I came away with few goodies for myself, ( Flora & Fauna 2011 Calendar from Mossiere, a pair of gold raindrop hoops by Favor Jewelry, a couple of cards from abby try again, and a feather kitchen linen by Herriott Grace) and my husband loved the Stumptown Coffee Roasters and the best Lebanese food ever at Nicholas Restaurant. Thank you Abby for the recommendation, and thank you Abby and Chelsea for hosting this beautiful shopping experience filled with so many creative artists and bloggers.

Bijou and Boheme

I've been scouring the design blogs looking for ideas when I found a new blog that I love, Bijou and Boheme. It all started when my son decided he wanted to be on his own and moved out a few weeks ago. I've been a little sad since he moved out. Actually, sometimes I really wanted him to move out. It's that never ending struggle between dependence and independence that can wreak havoc with a parent-child relationship. Well, anyway that's why things have been a little sporadic around here. I guess I've been suffering a little bit from empty nest syndrome which I never thought would happen to me, but when your only child who you have raised for 18 years and has always been with you leaves, I guess one might be due for a little sadness. Anyway, I'm doing better now and have decided to take over his space, of bedroom, bath and loft. It's time to redecorate! I'd like to redecorate the whole house, and that's how I happened upon this beautiful living space of Christine's.

I really like how she mixed and matched and put this space together. Although it might take some time, I am tempted to do like she did and sell everything I have and start with a clean slate.

You know what I think the best thing about blogging is? It's making genuine and soulful connections with fellow bloggers. Have you ever made any of those kinds of connections? I met Brooke in the spring of this year when she sent me a very sweet and personal e-mail one day after reading my blog. We made a personal connection and I have admired her authentic and courageous voice that she communicates on her blog since that very day. Brooke is quite talented with a sewing machine and has opened her very own etsy shop filled with lots of love and bunches of cute pillows, bags and totes.

I love these new paintings from Dee's collection, "Releasing the Mountain Dream". She really knows how to add character to these animals and the bright backgrounds of pink, yellow and turqoise really make them come alive. The little chipmunk "Ethel" is pretty cute. Little Winter: A Handmade Market

Thank you for your get well wishes while I was away recovering from surgery. I started to feel alot better after week three, but I needed just a little extra time to get back into the swing of things. I think I'd like to take an overnight trip to Portland for a little getaway and holiday shopping at Little Winter: A Handmade Market, hosted by Chelsea and Abby. It's only a 2 hour drive from my home and being held at the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon on November 6th and 7th.

I just love the romantic curves of this Verner Panton S Chair sitting on the veranda looking all beautiful in it's bright yellow dress. It's a bright spot that I'm using to cheer me up due to a little setback that has put a kink in my blogging plans as of this last Thursday. I was woken up early Thursday morning with pain in my lower right abdomen and by the end of the day I ended up going in for emergency surgery to have my appendix removed. I am thankful to be at home resting and recovering this weekend. I hope to be up and blogging and visiting you all again in a few days.

A Surprise Wedding

When my friend Laura and I went to Israel this last March, she met Bill. After the week long conference in Israel, they parted ways and went home. Laura to her home in Washington State and Bill to his home in Tennesee. After four long months of getting to know each other long distance, Bill decided to drive out to Washington State to see Laura. Upon seeing each other again in person they decided almost immediately that it was a match made in heaven and an answer to their prayers for a marriage partner. On July 1st we met for coffee and two days later I got busy gathering up all my ideas I'd been saving from reading design and wedding blogs and went to work overnight creating a sweet little park wedding for friends on 4th of July.

I was surprised and amazed that we pulled this all together in 3 days and I'm positive it was all by God's hand. When Bill and Laura came to me, I told them to go get their marriage license and I would take care of the rest. In three days I got a pastor friend to perform the ceremony, picked out a place for the wedding ceremony, pulled together what I had at home for decorations and baked and decorated a cake. The day turned out perfect and everything was beautiful! God is good!

Back From My Summer Vacation

Hello friends. I apologize for the sporadic posting this month. I know it's actually been like that for the last couple of months. Instead of just leaving this space blank for so long, I thought I'd let you know what's going on. The hours in my part time job that I work increased earlier this year and I was still able to keep up, but then my computer started acting up and now it takes forever and a day to load pictures. I haven't been able to fix it as of yet. I'm also working out six days a week at the gym and enjoying the time I get to spend with my husband since his retirement, so my time on the blog has been a little sparse. I thought I'd let you know that it might still be a little sporadic throughout the summer, or not if I get on a whim, but I'm not giving up blogging altogether. As you might have noticed, I took an un-announced break last week. I had a great time in Cannon Beach, Oregon with my friends last weekend and had alot of time to ponder and think over the week and the weekend and get things in gear for some life changes around here at the Allam's house. Sometimes when big changes in life come along for me, it's hard for me to concentrate on the little extra's like blogging. My husband is a few years older than me and he just retired from the Post Office after almost 30 years of service on Friday. Now I have two people in my household, my son and my husband, deciding what they wanna be when they grow up and it's been a little stressful for me. I don't always take kindly to the unknown, although I do like adventures so I'm gearing up my attitude for that. I'm excited for what's to come and for our new adventure in life together. We have a few plans, so we'll see how it all pans out. See you soon with more fun things to follow.

Hello Tuesday

I think this was one of the best Mother's Day's that I have had, at least in a long time. I got a chance to make this lemon squash for my Mom and wrapped up viola's in newsprint to give as gifts for all the mom's at the family get together at my parents place. My husband made me breakfast, we took the dogs for a walk by the river and I got to spend the day with my son, which is rare since he's 18 now and has a very busy life you know. Thank you for visiting and wishing me a Happy Mother's Day. I hope your day was special too.

The weather is still unpredictable here, one minute the sun is shining and then the next it rains and hails. Got caught in a little hail storm this week while out on a walk/run. It was exilarating though. Didn't know I would enjoy being caught out in the aggressive ramblings of nature that much, but all this exersize I've been doing has increased my energy level and improved my mental state as well. I hope you have the time to do something fun and exilarating for yourself this weekend. Time to engage one of the senses that you might not have engaged in awhile. It's that time of year now where I always say I better start doing some planting before it's too late.

We live in a townhome and have a teansy tiny backyard, but gardening in pots is my kind of gardening anyway. I'm hoping to plant some more veggies and herbs this year in my pots so I can just go to the back yard to gather my salad instead of the market. There are so many colorful and pretty products for gardening these days, especially since the trend is organic and grow your own. The Balcony Gardener has some very pretty graphic seed packets and these new eco watering can bottle adaptors.

I'm hoping to get some simple and easy direction from The Girls Guide to Growing Your Own and A Slice of Organic Life. I'm not a very seasoned gardener, so the more instruction I have and the simpler it is the better. I'd like to be successful at it this year. I've had a few trials in past years with tomotoes. The best thing is, I know organic tastes alot better when I buy it at the market and will taste even better coming from my own backyard right?

I'm a berry eater all summer long. Rasberries are my favorite. I love mixing raspberries, blueberries and blackberries and putting them on top of ice cream. During the summer I love picking blackberries right off the bush during walks by river near my home. Still working on the new blog layout with Ellie, but I just couldn't wait to show you my new banner. The artwork was created by Dee from Our Little Love Nest. Do you like it? I think Dee might need a little break from me after this. After a few late night phone calls and many, many e-mails and many requests like...can you make the balloons brighter, can you change the chair, now can you change it back, can you make the bird gray, no I think I liked it how you had it the first time, can you change the font, can you change this and change that, and now change it all back again. Last night was one of those nights when I got all caught up in my mind with thoughts of, nobody called, nobody cares, and I hate to go to that place because it can really take me downhill fast with thoughts reeling of negativity. So this morning I woke up and decided I need to think about what delights me today. Things like...my husband waking me up every morning with a kiss before he goes to work and telling me that I'm beautiful and that he loves me, listening to the dogs snore on the sofa next to me while I type away on my computer, hearing my son come downstairs at 12:00 midnight and banging around the kitchen because he needs a snack, and having the comforting feeling that at least I know where he is, safe and at home, warming up my chai tea latte in the microwave and sipping this warm, spicy, comforting drink while I prepare myself for the day, sitting here in the still quiet of the house with the gas fireplace warming me and blankets and pillows ruffled about the sofa haphhazardly from the night before, being inspired by blogs I'm reading in my google reader, thanking the Lord for another day of beautiful life! Please share with me what you delight in today.

It's been the usual rainy and gray weather here in Seattle today and I'm wishing for warm sunshine, ice tea and spring flowers on the patio. I saw these potted violas wrapped up in french newsprint on frolic yesterday and thought about having a spring tea with friends. {Israeli Countryside and the Sea of Galilee}

I have realized since being back from my trip that this time off from being online has been good for me. I'd like to share a few pictures with you from my trip and also to let you know that I will be extending my blogging break to April 1st. This is due in part to the personal nature of my trip. Since returning home from Israel I have had many things to do, many thoughts to process through, and a new direction in my life to contemplate. I hope you can bear with me. This has taken me a little longer to write than I thought.

This part of the story I am going to share with you is very personal to me and is the reason why I went to Israel. I did not go to Israel this time for pleasure or vacation. I went to Israel for the L'Chaim International Pro-Life Conference and Prayer tour with Be'ad Chaim (Pro-Life Israel) and also to join up with another ministry, Abundant Life (Chaim Beshefa).

Each day, 3,300 women wake up in America believing abortion is the only realistic solution to an unplanned pregnancy. In this tragic decision, not only is a human life snuffed out, but a woman’s life is changed forever. My life was changed forever when I made this life altering decision at the age of 19. Something that I thought would be over quickly and forgotten about so that I could get on with my life ended up being a secret that held me captive in guilt, regret and shame for many years. This journey that took me to Israel a couple of weeks ago started for me last year in March of 2009 when I joined an 8 week post-abortion bible study and recovery program at CareNet. It was during this study that I finally surrendered the secret that had held me captive for many years, and although I can never bring back my unborn child, this study allowed me to finally grieve for him, honor him and deal with all the anger, pain, guilt and shame surrounding my abortion decision.

The bible says that "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." (John 10:10) I wrote this poem during my healing process. It is a letter from God to a woman who carries the scarlet letter of abortion

Do you know you're a word from Heaven
For my word resides with you, and you have the power you see,
To fend off the thief, the liar, your evil enemy
There is a secret that you hold but it is not your burden to carry,
So don't lose heart my daughter and keep listening for me,
for through this healing journey, I will set you free.
I was there in your sorrow,
I felt your pain,
I am here to wipe your tears and make you whole again.
Not one is forgotten my beloved daughter,
not you nor the babe.
The child who was in your womb is now in my care,
and when the time is right I will take you there.
Do you know you're a word from Heaven
You are my beloved, my daughter, forgiven and set free!

My journey did not end there. After taking the 8 week program I signed up for extra training at CareNet and have led two of these post-abortive recovery studies so far. Israel was abundant with birds when we were there. I think this is where they fly south for the winter. It's a bird sanctuary. Birds represent freedom for me. I loved listening to all their whistles, coos and caws.

Below are a few of the places that we went to on the prayer tour. I have so many pictures it was hard to decide what to post here. Israel is filled with many uncovered biblical archeological sites.

This is the South Wall area at the Temple Mount. The first few steps that I am sitting on are the original steps to the Temple. This is the only place where it is said that Jesus probably did walk when going to the temple for the feasts such as Passover. That city above is the City of David.

A beautiful place now, but at one time it was the place where the followers of Baal sacrificed their children by fire to the god of Molech. The Valley of Honnom is also the traditional location of the Potter's Field bought by priests after Judas' suicide with the "blood money" with which Judas was paid for betraying Jesus.

Our last 4 days were spent in Tel Aviv and Old Jaffa, where we stayed and where we connected with the ministry, Abundant Life.

Hello friends, I'm back from Israel. I got home Thursday evening, but with the 10 hour time difference and 18 hour jet lag, I've been a little tired lately. My family really missed me and this is the surprise I came home too. My son made a sign and wrote "Welcome Home" in Hebrew.

My husband welcomed me home with balloons and bouquets of flowers throughout the house. This is the longest we have ever been apart and he missed me alot. I was very touched by all of his sentiments of flowers and proud of his flower arranging too. It's nice to be loved and missed.

I will be back soon with a few details and pictures about my trip.

I want to thank my friends Alli, Dawn, Dee, Micaela, and Nuit for guest posting while I was gone. You all had such creative and beautiful posts and it was such a delight to come home and read them. This space instantly caught my eye on A CUP OF JO today and I had to post it here for safe keeping. The green cabinet reminds me of a cabinet that I had in my room when I was a young child but it wasn't painted a pretty green like this one, it was very dark brown. I'd like to grow lemons in my house and have white shelves full of brightly colored glass that looks like the sea.
